Style Sayings: 4 Industry Terms + What They Mean

BLOG POST IMAGE

Have you ever gone to google something, but then just started at the search box because you didn’t know the name of the thing you wanted to look up?

This happens to me more often then I care to admit… but then again, I’m pretty sure that’s why google exists right?

Recently I realized how often I’ve confused my clients by using fashion industry words that they’ve never heard of. But then their face lights up in a smile once I’ve explained what the word means, because most times they’ve probably seen the thing you’re describing before but never knew what it is called.

So today, because I totally believe in the knowledge is power philosophy, I wanted to give you a quick breakdown of 4 fashion industry terms you may or may not have heard of before and what they mean.
Ready?!

Whiskering

THE FADING OF CREASES IN BLUE JEANS, ESPECIALLY AROUND THE CROTCH; OFTEN ADDED ARTIFICIALLY IN ORDER TO SIMULATE A WORN LOOK.

Princess Seam

PRINCESS SEAMS ARE LONG, ROUNDED SHAPED SEAMS THAT CAN BE FOUND ON THE FRONT OR BACK OF A GARMENT, DESIGNED TO ADD SHAPING OR A TAILORED FIT TO A WOMAN’S SHAPE. THEY USUALLY RUN FROM THE SHOULDER OR UNDER ARM, CURVING GENTLY OVER THE BUST AND DOWN TO THE LOWER HEM, GATHERING THE FABRIC TO HIGHLIGHT A LONG, SLIMMING LOOK.

Dolman Sleeves

A FULL SLEEVE THAT IS VERY WIDE AT THE ARMHOLE AND NARROW AT THE WRIST.

Bias Cut

REFERS TO WHEN A GARMENT IS CUT ON THE 45 DEGREE ANGLE OF THE FABRIC GRAIN. GARMENTS CUT ON THE BIAS APPEAR SOFTER AND MORE FLUID AND HAVE MORE STRETCH THAN THOSE CUT ON THE LENGTHWISE OR CROSSWISE GRAIN OF FABRIC.

Have you heard of any of these terms before today? If so, which ones? Were there any terms you had never heard of on this list?

You know I love to hear from you, so please share your thoughts in the comments section below!

  1. Hah! 3 out of 4 isn’t bad. I love that you did this. Would like to hear and see more. My favorite thing about working with you was how you explained why things worked on my body shape. Always positive and felt like a little taste of art school.

  2. I had heard “cut on the bias” before but not the others. I like this idea because it increases my awareness of how I see clothes when I’m shopping at the store or online. Thanks!

  3. I am a seamstress and know all of these terms except whiskering. You should keep doing the terminology definition list. It is very imformative and empowering when shopping or when trying to describe clothing. In addition, it would be helpful if you could add torso length to your body type calculator. I am short waisted and it has presented many challanges for me. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. I love your website!
