Happy 2018 pretty lady!
This is the time of year when pretty much everybody starts talking about all the ways they want to change themselves (not gonna lie, I get caught up in it too). There’s just something about the fresh start and new slate of a new year that makes you feel like you can conquer the world! That is until about the last week of January… when we begin to realize how much work is involved in making all those damn changes.
Here’s an idea: what if, instead of changing who you are, you focused on how to evolve? It even sounds less daunting doesn’t it? When you talk about changing yourself, there’s a negative undertone there that implies something is wrong with you. When the truth is, nothing about you is broken, you’ve just done a lot of growing. Just think about all the new people you’ve met, experiences you’ve had and lessons you’ve learned this past year. What you knew at the beginning of the year isn’t the same as what you know now… and that growth feels so good doesn’t it?
So in the spirit of evolution, how did your personal style evolve in 2017? Have you given it much thought? If not, I wanted to share 3 style rituals that I like to practice almost every new year.
Take Style Inventory
Make a list of any purchases last year you are totally in love with and wear frequently – next to each item, write out what it is about each item that you love (i.e. the fabric, the fit, the color, etc.)
Now make a list of any purchases from last year that you aren’t in love with and have hardly worn – the next to each item, write out what it is about each item you don’t like (i.e. fabric too itchy, too small, too big, etc.)
And now make a list of your top 3 outfits from last year that were total home runs – next to each look, write out what it was about each outfit that made it work (i.e. colors looked great on my skin, good pattern combo, etc.)
Finally make a list of your top 3 outfits from last year that were your least favorite – next to each look, write out what it was about each outfit that made it unsuccessful (i.e. patterns didn’t work together, didn’t feel me, etc.)
Have a Mantra
This is similar to when you choose your theme word for the year… like relationships or family.
Choose 3 words that describe how you want your close to make you feel this year. My style mantra for this year is: creative, inspired & confident
Clean it Out
Yes, I’m talking about a closet cleanse here. How many times have you heard me talk about a closet cleanse so far? A lot right? That’s because they really are that important to your overall style. You should be cleaning out your closet at least once a year, and there’s no better time than the new year to make it happen. I know it’s time consuming, but the more you do it, the faster it’ll go because you’ll have less and less to clean out!
Be sure to set aside at least 2-3 hours of uninterrupted time in your schedule. We’re gonna get a lot done in that time frame, but you need to be focused.
I’ve always found that a glass of Moscato (don’t judge!) and an awesome playlist can do wonders for your mood and help the time just fly by!
Be prepared with the following items beforehand:
A full length mirror
Your challenge workbook
3 clear garbage bags (large)
First, take every single item off their hangers and out of your closet, and put them all on your bed. (Yes, every little piece!)
Then, as you try on each piece, stand in front of you mirror and ask yourself 3 questions:
1. Does this compliment my shape?
2. Is this in alignment with who I am today, the message I want to convey and my dream style vision board?
3. Does this make me feel at least 2 of my 3 style mantra words?
If you can’t answer YES! to all 3 of these questions, then that item is gone, baby, gone. (No if’s, and’s, or but’s!)
Here’s a few other tips for making the process easier:
+ Label your garbage bags as “Giveaway”, “Alterations”, and “Consignment”
+ Take full length pictures of yourself in the mirror to give you another perspective of how a garment looks on your body.
+ If you can alter the garment to be a better fit for you, keep it!
+ If you have one or two sentimental items you just can’t get rid of, fold and place them in boxes or luggage where they won’t distract you
In the end, you should only be left with items that light you up!
You’ll be setting yourself up for total style success this year, once you complete these 3 steps. When you’re done, please come back and let me know how it all went in the comments below. In the meantime, what was your style mantra in 2017? Do you still resonate with the 3 words you chose?
