How to Create a Signature Hair Style!

I’ve had so many clients ask me about how they can up-level their hairstyle, after helping them up-level their wardrobe that I’ve lost count.

I may offer my opinion every now and then, but usually I politely remind them that I’m not a hair expert and decline to comment.

But today I decided I wanted to do something about it!

I’ve enlisted the help of my good friend & celebrity hair stylist Gregory Patterson!

I met Greg about 5 years ago, on the set of MarieTV when he joined Marie’s glam team, and we became fast friends.

Here’s a snippet of his BIO, to give you a taste of just how much of a frickin’ PRO Greg really is:

Gregory has worked the runway at New York fashion week having keyed the looks for Project Runway Seasons 14 & 15, and is now a celebrity consultant for Sally Beauty and FHI Heat. His talents have landed him on TV serving as lead stylist for Lifetime TV’s shows “Under the Gunn”, (2015 Lifetime TV) “Project Runway” Seasons 14 & 15 (2016-2017 Lifetime TV),”The Look Allstars (2018 CW Network), QVC, Home Shopping Network (HSN), The Shopping Channel (TSC) Canada, and Infomercials both national and internationally as a Celebrity Hair Stylist and Beauty Expert.

He has been featured in numerous lifestyle magazines as a Celebrity Hairstylist contributor including: Glamour, Shape, W, WWD, Harpers Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, In Style, Vogue, Elle, Refinery 29, Martha Stewart, Allure, Modern Salon, AMERICAN Salon, People, and Us Weekly. Allure Magazine featured Gregory as “Best Blow Dry Stylist” and “Ones to Watch” (2015) in the “Best of Beauty Directory”.

His Celebrity Clientele includes: Macklemore, Ed Norton, Meryl Streep, Britney Spears,Ellen Pompeo,Emma Stone, Julianne Moore, Zara Larrson, Pink, and Keri Washington, to name a few.

See, I told you he was dope ;)

So without further ado, please check out the incredible conversation I had with Greg in the video below.

I asked him all the hair questions I get from clients + he gave me all the tea on what it really takes to find a hair stylist (and ultimately a signature hair style) that you can really trust.

Press play to check out the video below, then come back & let me know which of the gems Greg dropped resonated with you most. Oh, and don’t forget to show Greg some serious love here on the blog, or on his Instagram account!

  1. A weight has been lifted! I loved that Gregory encouraged us to tell the stylist when we’re not comfortable with a look. When I’m not happy with a color or cut, I say, “it looks great!” even if I don’t feel that way. Now I have the courage to speak up next time. Thank you, both. You’re so cute together!

  2. I love you botj. That’s all. Thank you for the validation that comes from this video. A) that moving forward towards you joy open up opportunities. B) we get to play with our face in a FUN accepting loving way. And hair is part of that. YES, also it won’t happen unless you are willing to jump.

  3. Are you a mind reader?? This is crazy perfect timing. I just had a conversation with my hair stylist about this very thing earlier this week. I’m the type of woman who’s changed my hairstyle a lot over the years. But as I approach the big 5-0 and start to build a stronger personal brand in my business, I had a lightbulb moment that I need to create a consistent and recognizable look for myself. And stop changing it all the dang time.

P.S. It’s fun to hear more from Gregory. Love him on MarieTV.

    1. Ahh I love when synchronicity happens! Having a style that’s consistent for a few years can be great! But we’re also always evolving, so I think it’s cool to change the parts of you that you think need it at any given time ;)

  4. Such a fun conversation between you + Greg … made me really re-think hair + personal branding. And, I love the back stories of how you ended up in your careers too! xoxo

  5. I absolutely loved this! Even though I did a style inspiration board with you and do website inspiration boards with all of my design clients, it literally never occurred to apply the same process to my hair (smacks forehead). I also loved Greg’s examples of Elen, Cindy Crawford, etc. to illustrate how powerful a signature hairstyle can be. Thank you both for the new perspective xx
